character set, accepted by all Jewish communities, usually attributed to the great Rashi or a member of his family, Rabbi Shmuel of Playzy, one of the drafters of Tosafot.

This set consists of sixteen words denoting concepts fifteen. In the original, they are grouped in eight rhymed lines:

Sanctification (Kiddush), bath (hand)

Karpas, refraction (matzo).

The story, bathing,

Motfu, matzah.

Maror sandwich (of maror and matza)

Set the table,

The secret (afikoman), blessing (Birkat gamazon).

Hallel, completion.
