Tehilim. Psalm 135

תהילים קלה'

(1) Praise God! Praise the name of God! Praise, servants of G-d, (2) standing in the House of G-d, in the courtyards of the House of the Almighty, (3) praise G-d, for G-d is good! Sing to his name, for it is pleasant, (4) for G-d has chosen Jacob for himself, Israel his treasure. (5) For I know that G-d, our L-rd, is great, [above] all powers. (6) Whatever He wills, God will do in heaven and on earth, in the seas and in all deeps. (7) He raises clouds from the ends of the earth, makes lightning in the rain, brings the wind out of His storehouses. (8) He who struck down the firstborn of Egypt, from man to beast, (9) Who sent signs and wonders in the midst of you, Egypt, on Pharaoh and on all his servants, (10) Who struck down many nations and put to death mighty kings: ( 11) Sihon king of the Amorites, and Og king of Bashan, and all the kingdoms of Canaan, (12) and gave their land as an inheritance, for an inheritance to Israel his people. (13) God! Your name is forever. God! Your memory from generation to generation. (14) For God will do justice to his people and pity his servants. (15) The idols of the peoples are silver and gold, the creations of human hands. (16) They have a mouth that does not speak, their eyes do not see, (17) they have ears, but they do not hear, and there is no breath in their mouth. (18) Let those who make them be like them, whoever trusts in them. (19) House of Israel, bless God! House of Aaron, God bless! (20) House of Levi, bless God! Those who revere God, bless God! (21) Blessed be the G‑d from Zion who dwells in Jerusalem! Praise God!

Psalm 137

תהילים קלז'

(1) By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat and wept, remembering Zion. (2) On the willows, in the midst of it, we hung our harps. (3) For there those who captivated us demanded of us songs, and those who mocked us - joy: "Sing to us from the songs of Zion!" (4) How can we sing the song of God in a foreign land? (5) If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand be numb! (6) May my tongue cling to my palate if I do not remember you, if I do not exalt Jerusalem at the head of my joy! (7) Remember, O G-d, the day of Jerusalem to the sons of Edom, who said, "Destroy it, destroy it to the ground!" (8) Oh, daughter of Babylon, doomed to ruin! Happy is the one who will reward you according to your deserts, according to what you have done with us. (9) Happy is he who takes and smashes your babies against the rock!

___________

1 This song was written in the time of David, long before the Babylonian captivity. It prophetically mourns the destruction of Jerusalem, the expulsion of the Jews to Babylon, and the atrocities of the Babylonians towards the captives (Radak, Metsudat David).

Psalm 138

תהילים קלח'

(1) [Song of] David. I will thank you with all my heart; before the mighty I will sing of you. (2) I will bow in the direction of the Temple of Thy holiness, and I will give thanks to Thy name for Thy mercy and for Thy truth, for Thou hast magnified Thy word above every Thy name. (3) On the day that I called out, You answered me by instilling courage in my soul. (4) All the kings of the earth will thank you, O God, when they hear the words of your mouth. (5) And they shall sing of the ways of G-d, for great is the glory of G-d. (6) For God is high, but he sees the humble and punishes the proud from afar. (7) If I get into trouble, You will give me vitality; You will stretch out Your hand against the fury of my enemies; Your right hand will save me. (8) God will complete for me! Thy mercy, O God, forever, do not leave the work of Thy hands.

___________

1 Your terrible name, indicating Your greatness, is intolerant towards sinners. And your word, which allowed the acceptance of repentant sinners, has risen above all your names (Rashi, Metsudat David).

Psalm 139

תהילים קלט'

(1) To the leader [of the musicians]. Song of David. God! You tested me and recognized me. (2) You know when I sit down and when I get up, you understand my thoughts from afar. (3) Whether I am on the road, whether I am resting - You surround [me], all my ways are known to You. (4) For there is not yet a word in my tongue - and You, G-d, already know it perfectly. (5) Behind and in front You embrace me and lay Your hand on me. (6) Knowledge is hidden from me - it is high, I cannot comprehend it! (7) Where can I go from Your spirit, where can I flee from Your presence? (8) If I rise to heaven - You are there. If I lie down in the grave - and there you are. (9) If I fly on wings like the dawn, if I move to the edge of the sea - (10) and there Your hand will lead me, Your right hand will hold me. (11) If I say: "Only darkness will hide me, the night will surround me with darkness." (12) But even darkness does not obscure from You, but the night is as bright as day [before You], both darkness and light. (13) For You formed my inward parts; You knitted me together in my mother's womb. (14) I give glory to You, for I am wonderfully made. Marvelous are Thy creations, and my soul is fully aware of this. (15) My essence is not hidden from You, for I was created in secret, woven in the bowels of the earth. (16) Thy eyes have seen my fetus; everything is written in your book: the days created for me are all one for him. (17) How precious are thy thoughts to me, O God, how powerful are their principles! (18) I will count them; they are more numerous than sand; even if I stay awake and all my life - with You4. (19) Oh, that You, the Almighty, would strike the villain! The bloodthirsty would get away from me! (20) They exalt you in deceit; in vain do your enemies exalt you. (21) Do I not hate those who hate You, O God, and do I not wrestle with those who rise up against You? (22) I hate them with complete hatred: they have become my enemies. (23) Test me, G-d, know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts, (24) and see if I am on the path of perishability, then guide me to the path of eternity6.

___________

1 Lit, "kidneys".

2 In the lower part of the mother's womb (Rashi, Metsudat David).

3 Although the years of life prescribed for me are in the future, He knows them. as the present, for for Him the “past” and “future” are one (Metsudat David).

4 Even if I stay awake all my life and count, I will not be able to count them (Metsudat David).

5 They exalt you with evil intentions. It is said that You are very exalted and it is not fitting for You to observe a person and his behavior. Thus, they can preach their vain, immoral ideas (Metsudat David).

6 The way of eternity, or "the way of this world," is death. The meaning of the verse: “If You find that I am on a perishable path, then it is better to take me out of this life” (Ibn Ezra, Radak, Metsudat David).
