In this psalm, the Almighty warns Israel, “Let there be no strange god in you” – who is this “strange god” that dwells in man himself? – these are his evil inclinations and aspirations, over which he has lost control, and now they control him. Under the power of the “yetzer hara,” man becomes “stranger” to G-d, “stranger” to his people, and, ultimately, “stranger” to himself… In this dominion of the “strange god” lies the root of all the troubles of the Jewish people.
